By the time Thursday morning rolls around, I’ve already spent most of the week balancing school, work, and extracurriculars. I’m a senior in high school, a member of the Spell Bowl team, the sound assistant in theater, an employee at Chick-fil-A, and an assistant instructor at Integrity Martial Arts Academy.
And yes, sometimes it feels like a lot.
Senior year comes with its own set of responsibilities. There are classes, homework, college applications, and figuring out what comes next. Add extracurricular activities and a first job, and suddenly your calendar can look way more intimidating than your pre-calc homework. But being busy has taught me something important: balancing everything isn’t about finding more hours in the day. It’s about learning how to use the hours you already have!
First of all, know your schedule.
When you have several commitments, knowing where your time is going is very important. I work at Chick-fil-A on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, while Thursday mornings are dedicated to Spell Bowl and Monday nights are reserved for my work as an assistant martial arts instructor. To add another layer, theater is starting up again, and I have to be at rehearsals sometimes before and after school. Keeping track of everything helps me know when I have time for homework and studying and, most importantly, taking a break.
Secondly, prioritize what matters.
When everything feels important, figure out what needs to happen first. An assignment due tomorrow should come before one due next week. A scheduled work shift can’t always be moved, but some free time can. Instead of looking at everything I have to do at once, I focus on what’s next. Breaking a busy week into smaller pieces can make it feel much more manageable.
Thirdly, don’t let school fall behind.
I know that having extracurriculars and a job is exciting, but you cannot fall behind on your schoolwork. If I know I have a busy evening ahead, I’ll try to finish some schoolwork earlier. Even getting one assignment out of the way can make a huge difference. The goal isn’t to spend every waking moment working on homework. Instead, it’s to keep homework from piling up.
Next, make sure you carve out time for yourself!
Honestly, this is the easiest thing I forget when I’m busy. Not every moment needs to be productive. Sometimes you just need to watch a movie, read a book, or simply lie down and do nothing. Taking time to recharge doesn’t mean you are falling behind. It can help you come back to your responsibilities with more energy!
Lastly, find what works for you.
There isn’t one perfect way to balance school, work, and extracurriculars. Everyone’s schedule is different. For me, staying organized, prioritizing my responsibilities, and making time to rest has made a busy week way easier to swallow.
You don’t have to balance everything perfectly. Just find a balance that works for you!
