The Indiana Department of Transportation announced that signalized left turns from the Lloyd Expressway to Schutte Road will open Friday, October 30, in preparation for thousands of visitors expected to attend an event at the University of Southern Indiana.
USI is hosting The Wall That Heals, a traveling, three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. The memorial will be on display at USI’s Broadway Recreational Complex. It is free and open to the public 24 hours a day.
The exhibit honors the more than 3 million Americans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces in the Vietnam War and bears the names of the 58,281 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. The 2026 national tour will visit 31 communities across the country.
The left turn lanes from the Lloyd to northbound and southbound Schutte Road will open Friday. Drivers should reduce their speed and use caution as they navigate the new traffic pattern. INDOT will also use approximately five portable message boards to alert visitors to use the Schutte intersection to access the exhibit.
Leading up to the opening, road crews have been busy finalizing adjustments to traffic signals, stop bars and signage. Crews have been in the process of implementing a restricted crossing U-turn (RCUT) with signalized left turns for Lloyd traffic turning north or south onto Schutte.
Under the reconfigured intersection, Schutte is right turn only, with the use of U-turns for left turns and through traffic.
Paving will continue on the west side over the next week, and drivers should be prepared for travel lane shifts.
Beginning Monday, November 2, new lane restrictions will be in place between St. Joseph Avenue and Wabash Avenue. Watch for signs and pavement markings indicating lane reductions and obey the construction speed limit.
